Synopsis by Hal Erickson

Produced by Clara Kimball Young's own company, The Road Through the Dark starred Young as Gabrielle Jardee, the daughter of a bourgeois French family. When her village is invaded by the Germans, Gabrielle becomes the mistress of Duke Karl (Jack Holt), not to save her own hide but to prevent the village from being burned to the ground. During her three-year "affair" with Duke Karl, Gabrielle functions as a secret agent for the Allies, passing along secret information disclosed to her by the Duke. The crux of the film is the moral dilemma in which the heroine is placed: Despite her noble intentions, will she be considered "damaged goods" after the war, unworthy of being loved by any other man?
