Harold Lockwood and May Allison were once again teamed in the lightweight Metro production The River of Romance. The film was based on the E. J. Rath novel Sam, with Lockwood cast as the title character -- sort of. The story opens as society belle Rosalind Chalmers (Allison) leaves the hustle and bustle of the Big City behind to vacation with friends in the Thousand Islands. Meanwhile, ne'er-do-well William Kissam Kellogg (Lockwood) is staying nearby with his uncle. During one of his typical wild parties, Sam breaks a valuable vase. Desperately, he seeks a means of replacing the item before his uncle's return, and to do this he takes a job as the local ferryman, posing as the fellow normally assigned to that job, a guy named Sam. In this guise he meets Rosalind, who turns out to have far more nautical know-how than our hero. Before long, "Sam" falls in love with Rosalind but bides his time before revealing his true identity.
