Paul Bunyan's story is told in Reading Rainbow: Paul Bunyan, as viewers hear the legend of the gigantic lumberjack and his amazing strength. Trees were important to the character, and the program contains information about reforestation and the importance of tree conservation practices. Smokey the Bear makes an appearance and accompanies LeVar Burton to Paul Bunyan's home state, Maine, where Smokey receives instructions on battling forest fires. The young critics of the program review Whale in the Sky by Anne Siberell and The Star-Spangled Banner, illustrated by Peter Spier.
