The Action League of the San Francisco Bay Area Peninsula is an organization of political activists who don't conform to most people's image of folks committed to protest and dissidence. Nicknamed "the Raging Grannies," the Action League is comprised of women over the age of 50 (some members are as old as 90) who use a combination of songs, costumes (usually long flowered dresses and straw hats), humor and non-violent civil disobedience to spread their message against war, political injustice, abuses against the environment and other issues. Formed in 1987 to protest the construction of nuclear submarines, the Raging Grannies have continued to stage demonstrations and confront politicians (sometimes bringing a spine with them in case the official in question seems to lack one) in Northern California ever since, while inspiring similar groups all around the world. Filmmaker Pam Walton presents a look at the Action League and the many remarkable women who make their events happen in the documentary Raging Grannies, which received its world premiere at the 2009 Cinequest Film Festival.
