Synopsis by Mark Deming

A small church in Rome houses what may be one of the most important artifacts in Christianity -- a piece of wood that is alleged to be the titulus cruces (or horizontal crossboard) of the cross upon which Jesus Christ was crucified at Calvary. Ever since the relic was first discovered in the 4th Century A.D., biblical scholars as well as curious Christians everywhere have wondered if the "cross" is real, or merely an elaborate hoax. Authors Carsten Peter Thiede and Matthew D'Ancona wrote a book about their attempts to uncover the truth about the artifact, and Quest For The True Cross is a documentary which explores the evidence presented in their book. The film offers a look at the wooden relic, and presents knowledgeable opinions from archeologists and scholars on the truth behind this legend.
