A woman from mainland China has managed to get into Hong Kong with her infant son and is not aware that the amnesty deadline for illegal immigrants has recently expired. On her way to searching out her husband, she is caught by some gang members and raped, and then picked up by another underworld thug who happens to know her husband. He demands a huge ransom for her release, money the husband can only raise by donating a kidney - and he successfully undergoes that operation. Once he has the money, however, his wife and son are caught by the police on their way to the ransom exchange - and the distraught husband begs the police to let them go. He is only partly successful, as they release his son back to him but retain his wife. His saga is not over, for he must see his wife again before she has to leave and that proves to be a fateful encounter.
