German Impressionist Otto Dix made lasting images of war that, despite oppression, survive to this day. Dix's own experiences as a soldier during World War I shaped his artistic inspirations. Maltreatment after an injury spurred Dix to create a series of canvases depicting the reality of battle. His paintings became even more political, culminating in the early 1930s with the creation of Trench Warfare and Flanders. By then, the Nazi occupation forced Dix to abandon his art and join the German Army once again. The darkness with which Dix painted his nightmares still serves as a testament to the horror of war.
