Synopsis by Sarah Ing

Hans Hartung: A German Destiny is a study in the evolution of an artist. Originally influenced by the German impressionists and expressionists, Hartung eventually became a noteworthy contributor to the world of modern art. His style was highly abstract and conceptual, making him a forerunner to the free-from artists of later years. Hartung was born in Germany but moved to Paris in 1935. There, his dislike of structure led to an inner revolution. Along with Kandinsky and Fautrier, Hartung worked to develop his own language on canvas. During his lifetime, he joined the French Foreign Legion where he lost a leg in battle. He also incorporated his love of astronomy into his later work. Hartung is best remembered for his calligraphy-influenced spontaneity. His ability to forge new trails across the burgeoning world of abstraction made him famous worldwide.
