Synopsis by Mark Deming
Based on a popular Australian TV series, Popstars is a weekly "reality program" that follows the on-stage and behind-the-scenes lives of a group of young women who are being groomed to become members of a teen-pop vocal group. The series begins by examining the grueling auditions, in which hundreds of hopefuls are narrowed down to a handful of finalists who must impress a team of choreographers, vocal coaches, and record company executives in a bid to be chosen to join the group. Once the group is assembled, the five women will then be put through their paces as they prepare to record an album and launch a concert tour. Popstars debuted on the WB television network on January 12, 2001, with a one-hour special covering the auditions for the group; the series continued with weekly half-hour episodes following the progress of the finalists.
