Synopsis by Hal Erickson

Just as the second season DVD of Three's Company includes the series' original pilot episode (which featured several different cast members), the third season DVD also includes an intriguing glimpse into the Three's Company that might have been by featuring the second pilot episode, taped in 1976 but never aired on network television. "Pilot #2" contains many of the familiar Three's Company elements, including John Ritter as Jack Tripper, Joyce DeWitt as Janet Wood, and Norman Fell and Audra Lindley as Stanley and Helen Roper. Also, the pilot is essentially the same program as "And Mother Makes Four," which would be retaped as the second episode of the "real" Three's Company (and which, in turn, was adapted from an episode of the series' British sitcom prototype, Man About the House). The principal difference between this pilot episode and the series proper is the presence of actress Susan Lanier as Chrissy Snow. Though she gives a spirited performance, Lanier somehow wasn't quite right for the role of Chrissy, prompting ABC executive Fred Silverman to suggest a replacement -- a busy but relatively obscure comic actress named Suzanne Somers. And the rest, as they say, is history.
