Synopsis by Mark Deming
While John Denver was beloved by fans for his clear voice and the heartfelt messages of his lyrics, he also had the gift of being able to write simple but beautiful melodies with guitar parts whose musical strength belied their modesty. Pete Huttlinger was a close friend of John Denver who spent three years playing lead guitar in Denver's touring band, and in this video he demonstrates techniques to play some of Denver's best-known songs just as the songwriter himself performed them, ranging from simple strummed folk melodies to complex fingerpicked guitar patterns against walking bass lines. Selections demonstrated by Huttlinger include "Annie's Song," "Fly Away," "My Sweet Lady," "Rocky Mountain High," and more.
