Synopsis by Rose of Sharon Winter

This video is part of a series that examines sociopolitical movements of the 20th century. This episode focuses on the women's rights movement. The film considers gender issues at home and in the workplace. The birth control pill, reproductive rights, and the re-entry of women into the work force are some of the topics. Through spokeswomen such as Gloria Steinem and Betty Friedan, and the National Organization for Women, the importance of equal pay for equal work was addressed, leading to legislation on that issue. In every aspect of society, women became a more viable presence, no longer content to have second-class status in America. Archival film footage, personal recollections, and interviews tell the story.
