Synopsis by Hal Erickson
Based on a play by William DuBois, Pagan Lady top-bills Evelyn Brent as the title character, a "woman of the world" named Dut Hunter. In the tradition of Somerset Maugham's Rain, Dut is everybody's sexual plaything on a remote tropical island. When young, comparatively innocent Ernest Todd (Conrad Nagel), the nephew of evangelist Mal Todd (William Farnum), proposes marriage, Dut is tempted to accept but realizes she's no good for the boy and does her best to disillusion him. Hanging around on the sidelines is Dingo Mike (Charles Bickford), who's got Dut's number but loves her all the same. The film's highlight is an outsized lightning storm, with unsubtle carnal symbolism abounding.
