Synopsis by Mark Deming
Sophocles's Oedipus Rex gets a modern day retelling in this drama from Brazil. Modesto (Genezio de Barros) is a farmer scraping out a living in the countryside alongside his wife Evangelina (Angelina Muniz). One day, Cirineu (Gustavo Machado), the hired man, comes to Modesto with shocking news -- Evangelina has been having an affair with Modesto's brother Justo (Caca Amaral). Having been betrayed by two of the people closest to him, Modesto sinks into a simmering rage that eventually boils over into a shocking act of revenge. Olho de Boi (aka Oxen's Eye) received its American premiere at the 2008 Palm Springs Film Festival.
