Synopsis by Alice Day
During the Cold War, there was an ongoing race between the West and the Soviet Union for a coveted first place berth in technological and military might. Nova: Supersonic Spies deals with the competition between the two powers to develop the first supersonic passenger jet. Nova documents the intense contest, showing how each faction used ideas from the other, officially sanctioned or not. The Soviet TU-144 (referred to as Konkordski for its resemblance to the Concorde) rolled out first on December 31, 1968, months before the Concorde was ready. Since that period of distrust, the countries involved express interest in a cooperative effort to produce the next generation of supersonic transport.
