They go on to exploit the film's attempts to increase the feeling of tension instilled by unresolved crime by filling in dramatic pauses with hilarious remarks on the visuals of the movie. While certain parts of the film inspire only mediocrity on the parts of Tom Servo, Crow, and Joel, the Mitchell character's intelligence is brought into question repeatedly, creating some brilliant, self-reflexive running gags.
