This Vietnamese melodrama explores the moral and social issues faced by those who survived the war and also presents an infrequently seen view of life in rural Vietnam. It begins during the war as young Tu is sent to the front. His girl friend Na watches him leave. Tu does not return until ten years later. By then Na has become a social outcast for marrying a soldier and bearing his child. She had met him while she was serving as a nurse. He was later killed and as there was no documentation of their marriage, her fellow villagers consider the child illegitimate. Tu does not care and proposes to her, but the shamed Na feels she cannot accept. Meanwhile Tu's family tries to talk him into marrying a lovely young school teacher.
