Synopsis by Nathan Southern
The accomplished classical conductor André Previn serves as a fitting narrator to the documentary Mozart on Tour, Episode 5: Vienna and Prague. The program is culled from a series originally broadcast on the BBC in 1984 that chronicles the "journeys" of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's life, one "sequence" at a time, set to music from that period. This particular episode sets two such sequences back-to-back. In the first, "Vienna," Previn recounts the events surrounding Mozart's composition of his opera The Marriage of Figaro in Austria, while the composer's Piano Concerto KV 491 unfurls on the soundtrack, as interpreted by Previn. In the second, "Prague," Previn tells the story of the young Mozart's composition of Don Giovanni, which he was commissioned to write after performing Figaro in the Czechoslovakian capital. As an accompaniment to this story, classical pianist Zoltán Kocsis plays Mozart's Piano Concerto KV 488.
