Synopsis by Rose of Sharon Winter

This film is part of a series that chronicles life in the Montparnasse section of Paris from the 1890s through World War II. This old quarter of Paris drew artists, musicians, and writers, who came seeking kindred bohemian spirits. This included a group of disparate musical composers, who were dubbed "Les Six" by the critic Henri Collet. Though stylistically different, each member of the six was iconoclastic, rebelling against the popular romantic and impressionistic music of the day. Influenced by Jean Cocteau, they composed everything from concertos to ballets, using elements from jazz and Brazilian music. The composers included Darius Milhaud, Francis Poulenc, Germaine Tailleferre, Louis Durey, Georges Auric, and Arthur Honneger.
