A few days in the life of a brutal tyrant at the end of rope are dramatized in this bitter political satire from Haitian filmmaker Raoul Peck. President Jean de Dieu (Zinedine Soualem) lives in a huge mansion atop a mountain overlooking Port-au-Prince as he tries to make sense of wreckage of his political career. Furious with the media's portrayal of him, de Dieu's underlings have abducted a noted radio reporter and the president occasionally tortures him, hoping to learn more about the journalist's colleagues. The president has invited leaders from around the word for a special celebration of Haiti's independence, but his reputation has become so toxic nearly everyone has cancelled. de Dieu's staff have hired a new maid, and the leader has become obsessed with bedding her, though she refuses to consider it. And as the president sinks into madness in his compound, a revolt is brewing among his increasingly angry constituents. Inspired in part by the latter days of the rule of Henri-Christophe and Alexander Sokurov's film Moloch, Moloch Tropical was an official selection at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival.
