This series was the first in the Gundam franchise to take place in an alternate universe. Rather than featuring the characters and events of the Universal Century in which all previously produced Gundam series and films had taken place, Mobile Fighter G Gundam takes place in the Future Century and proposes different events for the people of Earth and the colonies. Rather than portraying a continual conflict between the two, this series depicts a fighting tournament held between the Gundams of all interested parties to determine the leader of the colonies. Mobile Fighter G Gundam was panned by many fans of the franchise for being too little like earlier series and adhering too strongly to tropes of tournament-style anime like Dragon Ball.
