This meditative and highly allegorical film explores the inner conflict experienced by a middle-aged couple who have undertaken to care for an extremely aged, formerly wealthy old woman. They do not feel competent to earn their living in the postwar world in any other way, and expect to inherit the old lady's house when she dies. Even so, they feel constricted by the whole situation. One highlight of the film is an occasion when they enter the lady's room naked, and she banishes them in a manner reminiscent of Adam and Eve's banishment from the Garden of Eden.
