Synopsis by Hal Erickson

Beatriz Michelana, a prolific -- and surprisingly forgotten -- stage and screen star of the teen years, played the title role in Mignon. Based on a popular opera (an earlier version, running three reels, had been directed by Alice Guy Blache) this oft-told tale of powdered-wigged aristocrats, gypsy curses and deep dark family secrets actually contains a character named Lothario, whose name and general disposition are one in the same. In her eagerness to include all the story's familiar elements, the director tended to rush certain scenes and also allowed a few continuity gaps to slip by. As gypsy lass Mignon, actress Michelana exuded far more raw eroticism while fully clothed than did the bare-legged subordinate character played by Belle Bennett. Though filmed in New Jersey, Mignon successfully conveyed the story's 18th century British milieu.
