Synopsis by Mark Deming

Magical creatures discover their powers extend only so far in the material world in this mildly surreal satire from Canadian filmmaker Mazdak Taebi. A fairy (Sadegh Makeli) is given human form and sent to Tehran so he can help Mr. Rasouli (Shapoor Gharib), an unhappy and elderly man living in the teeming Iranian capitol. The fairy begins by fixing Mr. Rasouli's television, only to discover that the old man doesn't watch it anymore, convinced that the tube is looking at him rather than the other way around. The fairy offers to grant a wish for Mr. Rasouli, but the man keeps asking for favors that are out of the sprite's control -- ending war around the world or seeing his son who died in battle. As the fairy introduces Mr. Rasouli to others who have suffered because of armed struggle, he finds himself drawn to the television set and becomes hooked on the movie channels, developing a crush on Uma Thurman after catching a broadcast of Kill Bill. Mercy received its world premier at the 2006 Toronto Film Festival.
