Synopsis
Part 2 of four looks at the fallout from an influx of Hispanics into a black community as it focuses on the King-Drew Medical Center in South Central Los Angeles. King-Drew was built in the wake of the 1965 Watts riots and its staff (including the decisionmakers) is predominately black. How that affects its increasingly Latino clientele is explored, as is the adjustment that King-Drew has been making. It hasn't been easy---illustrating both the simplicity and complexity of racism. Says writer Jane Lazarre (whose comments are interspersed throughout the hour): "There isn't any escape from the confusion." Novelist John Edgar Wideman and poet Luis Rodriguez also comment.
