Masterclasses: Lieder

Synopsis by Jason Buchanan
In the years following celebrated vocalist Lotte Lehmann's retirement from the stage, the veteran opera diva devoted much of her time and efforts to teaching master classes in interpretation at Santa Barbara's Music Academy of the West. As the cameras of KQED in San Francisco captured Lehmann's remarkable insight, stories, and performances, such students as Marilyn Horne, Rose Bampton, and Grace Bumbry sat in rapt attention. In this release of those educational performances, Lehmann performs the works of Johannes Brahms, Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, and Hugo Wolf.
