This Finnish film is the tragic tale of a woman who longs to be free, but who has neither the strength nor the street-smarts to pull it off. As the film opens, Marja has a job and a boyfriend. The boyfriend kicks her out for clinginess when she objects to his making love to another woman in their apartment. She moves back in with her mother after getting sick and losing her job. When she is forced to commit her aged grandmother to an asylum, her own breakdown follows.
