synopsis
This audacious blend of cinematic, theatrical, and operatic styles contrasts the lives and loves of Mary, Queen of Scots, and Elizabeth, Queen of England, as it blends the text of the play by Friedrich Schiller with the music from Gaetano Donizetti's opera on the same themes. Shot in authentic historical locations rather than studio sets, Maria Stuarda also employs the talents of operatic legends Luciano Pavarotti as the Earl of Leicester and Joan Sutherland as Scottish monarch Mary Stuart.
