Synopsis by Hal Erickson

Of the many Andre Roosevelt "expedition" documentaries, Manhunters of the Caribbean is the shortest, running a scant 51 minutes. Special emphasis is given to the animal life of the Caribbean, especially those species who do battle against each other. Much of the film is devoted to an underwater search for Spanish treasure, with a bit of melodrama added to the stew by shots of native throwing spears at the intrepid divers (scenes like these definitely smack of contrivance). When first shown in New York, Manhunter of the Caribbean elicited laughs in the wrong places. Still, the film did well in the hinterlands, where documentaries of this sort were traditionally popular.
