Synopsis by Tracie Cooper
Directed by La Jirasuradej, Mama Wahunzi is a short documentary centered around the disturbing lack of wheelchairs in developing countries. "Mama Wahunzi", which translates to "women blacksmiths", is a real life group of East African women who have taken it upon themselves to build wheelchairs for themselves and other handicapped members of their communities. Sponsored by an American organization by the name of Whirlwind Wheelchairs International, the women of Mama Wahunzi explain how they've gained control of both the physical and emotional aspects of their lives by participating in the project.
