Synopsis by Mark Deming

Heinrich Luber is an artist, but he doesn't work in canvas or clay -- Luber is a performance artist who, instead of staging his pieces in galleries or art spaces, takes his creative expression to the street, and for him the reaction of onlookers is an integral part of the process. Luber's performances show him floating in air, bending at odd angles and balancing atop identically dressed colleagues, creating whimsical and gently surreal visions that stand out from the world around Luber while keeping one foot balanced in reality. Filmmaker Anna-Lydia Florin profiles Heinrich Luber in her documentary Luber Aloft, which includes footage of Luber performing in public, interviews in which he discussing the thinking behind his work, and behind-the-scene glimpses at the preparations and gadget making that goes into his pieces. Luber Aloft received its American premiere at the 2009 Full Frame Documentary Film Festival.
