Philosophical musings punctuate and perhaps even motivate the activity of Jim, who is on an inconclusive quest through forest and lake country. One of his goals, apparently, is to meet the author of the book "Mick Prophet" so as to better understand his work. Jim is assisted in his quest by Kym (who reads excerpts of the book to him), a real-estate agent (who is one guise of the prophet), and a young guttersnipe whose speech is peppered with vulgarities.
