Although the rope across the lion's pit looked precarious in chapter four of Lost City of the Jungle, chapter five reveals that Rod (Russell Hayden) made it to safety with relative ease. Realizing that Sir Eric's (Lionel Atwill) interest in the fabled Glowing Goddess may prove of vital importance, Rod and Tal Shan (Keye Luke) discover a secret passageway to the ruined Temple of Pendrang, where the statue is thought to be located. Searching the tunnel, Rod comes across a fiery pit when attacked by Sir Eric's two lackeys, Marlowe (George Lynn) and Johnson (Dick Curtis). As the chapter comes to a conclusion, an outnumbered Rod is thrown into the flames.
