Synopsis by Nathan Southern
This documentary program finds filmmaker Jan Schmidt-Garre accompanying acclaimed photographer Andreas Gursky, as Gursky creates his work "Hamm, Bergwerk Ost." The film observes virtually every aspect of the creative process, from Gursky's first viewings of the motive to taking the photographs themselves and digitally processing the final image. Schmidt-Garre also follows the photograph to its final resting place, in the collection of Ukrainian art connoisseur Viktor Pinchuk. Along the way, experts turn up for commentary including Hilla Becher, Werner Spies and Gursky himself.
