Synopsis by Nathan Southern

A commercial success from his innumerable composition credits on the albums of grade-A country legends (Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, Tom T. Hall and The Allman Brothers), Billy Joe Shaver nonetheless retained some obscurity as a performer. He is perhaps best known for his tough-as-nails country rocker "Georgia on a Fast Train," but garnered a cult following with the albums I'm Just an Old Lump of Coal. . . But I'm Gonna Be a Diamond Someday, Salt of the Earth, Electric Shaver, Earth Rolls On and many others. Shaver headlined an episode of the smash PBS concert series Austin City Limits in 1984. That episode is now available in full, in the home release Live From Austin, Texas: Billy Joe Shaver. In this hour-long special Shaver performs such hits as "Black Rose, "Georgia on a Fast Train," and "Old Five-and-Dimers Like Me."
