Synopsis by Gönül Dönmez-Colin

Aka: Blind Sky Cielo cielo, the first feature film of Chilean director, Nicolas Acuna, is a combination of a family chronicle, a thriller and a very minimal love story. The main character Ignacio, a professional thief meets Malena, a pretty girl with an artificial leg during a bus journey. He tells her about his adventures in recent months. In the form of a long flashback, we see a failed robbery, which puts Ignacio's brother Damaso in jail and forces Ignacio to flee only to end up in worse circumstances than before. He falls into the hands of a psychopathic idiot who tortures him. It looks like he will not be able to survive the ordeal. However, he manages to escape during the New Year's Eve. He has a fling with a female Indian farmer before embarking on the long bus journey home where an unpleasant surprise is waiting for him. The film's focus is aging crooks who lead a pretty bourgeois life until a wrong decision lands them in hell. The dialogues are somewhat stale, but Acuna is at his best when he balances the peaceful home life of the criminals with their unlawful activities in which everyone can suddenly lose control. The camerawork of Rodrigo Ivan Sepulveda contributes to the rhythm of the film which alternates between American crime films and calm and compassionate family dramas. Cielo cielo was screened at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, 1999.
