Synopsis by Alice Day

Land of the Eagle Vol. 2: "Confronting the Wilderness" is an examination of the early natural history of North America, and the relationship between the native Americans and French and British traders, with the focus on cooperation. The rugged terrain of the eastern seaboard was a mecca for hunters and trappers, who found a wealth of wildlife to exploit. The Ojibwa, Huron, Ottawa, and Algonquin Indians worked with French fur traders to build a lucrative market as the St. Lawrence area became developed. Misfortune arrived in the guise of smallpox, which cut a large swath through the Indian population.
