Synopsis by Alice Day
Living conditions in the American southwest can be frustrating and unrewarding. Land of the Eagle Vol. 6: "Living on the Edge" examines the early Spanish explorers as they pushed their way into the region, still looking for gold. The program outlines how they managed to adapt, and the methods used by plants and animals to adapt to this harsh environment. The Papago and Pima Indians learned to survive long before, and their relationship to the natural surroundings are examined. When Europeans inroduced irrigation to the desert, the face of the land was changed forever.
