Released in the U.S. as The Strife Eternal, the 6-reel British costume drama Jane Shore was set during the War of the Roses. Blanche Forsythe, at the time Britain's leading film actress, was seen in the title role. Plot and characterization took a back seat to spectacle, as directors Bert Haldane and F. Martin Thornton tried to out-do the Italian historical epics of the era. In one battle scene, a total of 5800 extras were reportedly used. Alas, the directors seemed uncomfortable handling such larger-than-life sequences, perennially choosing the least interesting camera angles and least appealing locations. Existing prints of Jane Shore are interesting on an academic level, but in terms of quality and entertainment value the film ran a poor second to the Italian pictures it strived to emulate.
