Produced at the CBC's Ottawa studio, Inquiry was a public affairs program with more of a cutting edge than was customary on Canadian TV of the period. Each episode focused in a decidedly opinionated fashion on a single current events issue, some of which were of sufficient enough importance to command as many as four weeks' worth of broadcasts. As the series' popularity and budget expanded, its range of subject matter went beyond the borders of Canada and into the international scene. In order to reach the widest possible viewership, the series was seen in both an English and a French language version (the latter would have been hosted by Canadian politician Pierre Trudeau, but he turned the opportunity down). Fluctuating between Monday and Tuesday night timeslots from December 26, 1960 to July 27, 1964, Inquiry is regarded by Canadian TV historians as the direct precursor to the long-running This Hour Has Seven Days; indeed, both series were hosted by the highly outspoken Laurette LaPierre.
