Synopsis by Cecilia Cygnar
This documentary explores the world of the Jewish people and culture in Amsterdam before, during, and after World War II. Produced by the National Center for Jewish Film, In Search of Jewish Amsterdam takes a detailed look at the Jewish life in Amsterdam before the war. After the war began, the Jews' lives were altered by the onset of the Holocaust and fear of the Nazis. Many Jews in Amsterdam went into hiding and many tried to flee to America or other safe havens such as Switzerland. Some were successful in escaping and some were not. After the war, the city had to set about restructuring the damage from the fighting, and the Jews had to overcome the loss of innocent lives. This documentary includes interviews with historians and Jewish survivors who talk about their experiences during this horrific period of time in Amsterdam.
