A group of factory workers stage a strike to protest the long hours and deplorable working conditions. Plagues by their inexperience in labor negotiations, they almost cave in to the hard line proposals of the management before emphasizing their point and changing things for the better. Marcello Mastroianni leads the workers who are not apposed to resort to violence due to their lack of articulation. The workers voice their individual feelings about, work, society, love and the human condition they seek to improve.
