Synopsis by Nathan Southern
The "hunky" in the title is non-derogatory slang for "Hungarian"; Peter Forgacs's ambitious documentary intercuts home movies, interviews and archival photographs into a massive collage, to convey the experiences of the Hungarian immigrants who moved to the U.S. between 1890 and 1921. The director's themes are those of deliverance, immigration, assimilation, and much more; accordingly, the film works on a broad canvas, moving through such locales as rural Hungary, Ellis Island, and various Hungarian settlements in the U.S.
