Synopsis by Hal Erickson

In Metro's The House of Tears, Emily Stevens joined the ranks of actors playing dual roles in 1915 films. Though happily married to a Wall Street broker, Mrs. Alice Collingwood (Stevens) runs off with another man, who abandons her soon thereafter. Year later, Alice's daughter Gail (also Stevens) as become an ace newspaper reporter. One of Gail's most important assignments is to investigate the sudden rise to wealth and prominence of war profiteer Henry Thorne (Walter Hitchcock). What she doesn't know is that Thorne is the man who ran off with her mother. Struck by the astonishing resemblance between Gail and Alice, Thorne proposes marriage to the younger girl. This provides a perfect cue for the scorned and abandoned Alice to save her daughter from making the same mistake she did, so many years before.
