(2006)1.5Jeremy WheelerAlthough Paul Verhoeven's invisible-man horndog opus Hollow Man was nothing to crow about, apparently it was just good enough to follow up with this straight-to-DVD formulaic sequel starring former "it" man Christian Slater. With a fraction of the budget and little of the lurid fun that Verhoeven injected into the previous flick, this sad little sequel feels more like an espionage thriller than any kind of sci-fi horror fiesta. The plot is basically "find that invisible dude!" with Slater (almost in full voice-over mode) running from scientists and detectives for the whole film. Effects-wise, don't look for anything that ups the ante in this one -- even the big dual invisible-man final showdown in the rain is an anticlimactic bust. In a way, Hollow Man 2 is exactly what it promises to be -- hollow, just in case anyone says they weren't warned.
