Although its five-year run was comparatively short, Holiday Ranch was one of Canada's most popular weekly variety series, gleaning fans from both sides of the Canada-U.S. border. Emphasizing country music and cornball comedy, the series was inexpensively produced, but made up for its lack of production polish with energy and enthusiasm. Staged in a set resembling a ranch house, the program spotlighted top Canadian musical artists, recurring rustic characters à la Hee Haw, and, by way of continuity, an "Idea of the Week" -- usually a silly invention -- to keep the audience riveted between specialties. Debuting in January 1954, Holiday Ranch was at first seen on a Monday through Friday basis, but soon settled on a weekly Saturday night slot (when it wasn't preempted by a hockey game, that is). The series continued its merry way until the CBC finally pulled the plug in 1959.
