This surreal evocation of androgyny from filmmaker Gregory J. Markopoulos was inspired by Séraphita, Honoré de Balzac's novel about a hermaphrodite. Shooting in public and private locations throughout Boston, Markopoulos features a young man (non-professional actor Gordon Baldwin) who is seen wearing a tuxedo but also has visions of himself dressed in a colorful sari (the traditional Indian garb of women). Images of fans, birds, and animal furs abound as he tries to integrate the twin aspects of his character, and the film culminates in a moment when both his male and female personae share the frame.
