Synopsis by Nathan Southern

Avant-garde filmmaker Peter Halasz draws on an obscure Eastern European historical anecdote and uses it as the basis of his 77-minute experimental work Herminafield: Apparitions. The bizarre incident in question transpired circa 1956, when a group of handicapped residents of a Hungarian medical clinic attempted to defend themselves against an encroaching Soviet invasion with twelve grenades and eight rifles. To recreate these circumstances in the film and evoke the creepy, hallucinatory overtones of the event, Halasz employs a combination of tabletop miniatures, traditional dolls, and live, masked Hungarian actors. At time of this film's production, performance artist and surrealist Halasz was dying of terminal cancer.
