Here's a rarity: An Australian film of the 1930s that wasn't directed by Ken G. Hall. Heritage traces the history of Australia, from its rude origins as a penal colony to its present prominence in the world community. Much of the film dwells upon the country's "frontier" days, which occurred at roughly the same time as America's Wild West. Critics noted director Charles Chauvel's debt to Hollywood westerns, The Covered Wagon in particular. An enormous box-office hit, Heritage won the 1935 Commonwealth "Best Locally-Made Picture" award.
