Four years after the events of .hack//SIGN, the virtual reality computer game "The World" is considered much safer. Twins Shugo and Rena have just won a contest bestowing them with two heavily sought after characters in The World -- or so they think. The two are expert players in the virtual reality computer game, but strange occurrences have been surrounding them, and the bizarre happenings are only becoming more frequent. Are these two happy-go-lucky gamers the target of an obsessive player who wants their characters for himself? Are they playing a game at all, or does someone have plans for Shugo and Rena that they don't even know about?
